Meta to end Quest 2 and Quest Pro OS updates by March 2027
Meta plans its last OS update, v213, for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro by March 2027, with security patches continuing through the end of 2027.

Meta plans to release the final OS update for its Quest 2 and Quest Pro VR headsets by March 2027. That last update is planned to be version 213, or v213. 1
The headsets do not go dark after that. Meta says it will keep shipping security patches and critical bug fixes through the end of 2027. 1 In plain terms: the software stops gaining new features, but the fixes that keep it safe and working continue for roughly another nine months past the last update.
Developers get a similar runway. Apps that support the Quest 2 or Quest Pro can be submitted through December 2027. 1
The Quest 2 launched in 2020 and the Quest Pro in 2022. Meta discontinued both in 2024. 1
Meta now calls the Quest 3 and Quest 3S “now the baseline for Meta VR gamers.” 1 The company says those headsets offer more performance headroom (spare processing power for demanding apps) and built-in mixed reality, which blends virtual objects with a view of the room. 1 The timing lines up with Meta’s planned VR Glasses, due in spring 2027, which Meta says run on the same OS and SDKs (software development kits, the toolboxes developers build apps with). Apps built for Quest 3 and 3S carry forward to them. 1
Meta also acknowledged the older hardware’s reach, saying Quest 2 and Quest Pro “laid the foundation for this platform, and millions of people still play on them.” 1
Our read: Think of this as a long goodbye, not a switch being flipped. The hardware inside a Quest 2 is the same on the last day as the first, so what changes is the software around it. Once v213 ships, new system features go to newer headsets, and developers will increasingly build for the Quest 3 line and the coming glasses, since Meta points them there. What we do not know is how quickly apps will drop Quest 2 support once the December 2027 submission window closes. If you own a Quest 2 and your library plays fine today, nothing breaks on the update’s final day.
On the bench: if you own a Quest 2 or Quest Pro, expect security fixes through 2027 but no new system features after v213, and treat a Quest 3 or 3S as the safer pick if you are buying now.
