Meta freezes Quest 2 features and still runs the cash register

Meta will stop feature work on Quest 2 and Quest Pro in 2027 while keeping stores and cross-play alive; that is a long soft sunset, not a full life for the headsets people still use.

I am reacting to Meta’s move to put Quest 2 and Quest Pro at “end of feature development,” which we laid out in our earlier report. Final OS updates land by March 2027, security patches and critical bug fixes run through the end of that year, new app submissions cut off in December 2027, and the stores stay open. 12

That is a polite calendar for a platform that still has millions of people on it. Meta itself says those headsets “laid the foundation for this platform,” and that the crowd on them has not gone home. 2 Quest 2 shipped in 2020, Quest Pro in 2022; both left store shelves in 2024. 23 Now the company calls Quest 3 and Quest 3S the baseline and points everyone toward Meta VR Glasses in spring 2027. 23

Here is the gripe, and it is aimed at the practice, not the people still strapping plastic to their faces. “End of feature development” with the storefront still open is how you keep taking money from a generation while you stop investing in it. Existing apps can get updates, buyers can still find and purchase titles, and cross-play with Quest 3 and Quest 3S continues. 13 Fine. That is better than bricking the library overnight. It is also a tidy way to freeze the hardware in place, skip testing new OS and SDK work against it, and route the exciting stuff—new features, APIs, mixed-reality headroom—to the newer line. 3

The fair counterpoint is real, so I will say it without sneering. Six-year-old standalone gear cannot absorb every OS release forever. Clear dates beat silent decay. Meta is giving developers a long runway, requiring at least 180 days’ notice if ending support would cut users off from content or essential services, and it is following a path it already walked with the original Quest. 3 Hardware has a lifespan. I remember when a console generation ended because the next box shipped and the old one stayed in the attic with its cartridges. Nobody promised infinite OS patches for a cardboard box.

What would change my mind is not another roadmap slide. It is proof that the install base Meta brags about is treated as first-class past the marketing window: libraries and multiplayer that do not quietly become second-tier after December 2027, and no soft shove that treats a paid headset as a temporary rental until Glasses day. Until then, I will grant this much through gritted teeth—keeping purchases, updates, and cross-play alive for millions is more honest than a hard kill switch. I still want the company that sold nearly twenty million Quest units on the back of Quest 2’s value to finish the job for the people who bought in, not just open the register on the way out. 3
