Samsung Electronics reported another all-time-high quarter, with revenue up 14% from Q3 and operating profit of KRW 107.4 trillion. The company says it is the first tech firm to pass KRW 100 trillion in quarterly operating profit. 1
The memory business did nearly all of it. The Device Solutions division, which makes the chips, booked KRW 147.1 trillion in consolidated revenue and KRW 106.5 trillion in operating profit. Samsung credits a surge in HBM4 sales and server SSDs. 1
Notice that the division’s operating profit is almost the entire company’s operating profit. Phones, displays and appliances are along for the ride.
The phone side, Mobile eXprience plus Networks, posted KRW 37.7 trillion in revenue and an operating loss of KRW 0.6 trillion. That is a slightly smaller loss than the KRW 0.7 trillion reported for Q2. Samsung plans a year-end push with the Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy S26 series. 1
Why should a phone or PC buyer care? Because the company expects memory demand to keep growing as new CPU and GPU platforms arrive, and says AI-driven demand will “far exceed the industry supply” compared with 2026. 1 When the maker of your RAM and storage is this busy and this profitable, the supply is spoken for. The source states no price effects, so I will not promise any, but a seller with demand outrunning supply is not the usual setup for discounts.
Samsung spent accordingly. Quarterly capital spending hit KRW 29 trillion, up KRW 12.2 trillion from Q3, with KRW 27.2 trillion going to the chip division. 1
Shareholders get paid too: KRW 4,601 per common share and the same per preferred share, about KRW 30 trillion in total. The 2026 goal is returning KRW 90-110 trillion, including a “substantial” buyback. 1
Asterisk count: one. Samsung’s outlook for next year is a forecast of demand, not a guarantee of supply.
Our read: Samsung is now, in practice, a memory company that also sells phones. The record profit shows where the money is, and it is not in handsets. If you are planning a device or PC purchase, expect memory to stay the part the industry fights over.
