Discord will put some large public server messages in web search

From mid-December, messages in designated channels of Discoverable Servers with 1,000 or more users can appear in search engines, with admin and user opt-outs, PC Gamer reports.

Discord will make messages from certain large public servers appear in web search results starting in mid-December, according to PC Gamer.1

The change is limited to Discoverable Servers, which the report defines as certain large public Discord servers with 1,000 or more users. Admins of those servers can opt the whole server out of search engine discoverability, or restrict indexing to selected channels. Individual users can opt out so their own messages in those servers do not show up in web search. Invite-only servers and direct messages are not part of the change.1

Discord presents the move as a way to surface answers that used to live on public message boards. A company blog post quoted by PC Gamer notes that boards once carried long-form, structured talk about helping people and theory crafting, that much of that activity has shifted into Discord servers, and that useful material has been locked inside those conversations. The company says it wants to fix that. From mid-December, answers posted in designated Discoverable Server channels are set to appear in web searches. Discord group product manager Kelsey Duncombe-Smith said, “Usernames and avatars will not be shown alongside these messages,” per the report.1

The indexing has not started. The admin and user controls are already available. Server admins can opt a Discoverable Server out or limit which channels can be found. Users who want their posts kept out of search can do so in User Settings under Data and Privacy.1

What you should do: If you run a Discoverable Server and do not want its chat pulled into search engines, set the server- or channel-level opt-out now. If you post in those servers and prefer your messages stay off the open web, open User Settings, go to Data and Privacy, and opt out before mid-December. Invite-only spaces and DMs do not need a setting change for this feature.

Our read: Discord is treating designated public channels more like searchable forum archives, with opt-outs as the main brake. The gap between live settings and a mid-December start is the practical window for admins and users to decide before anything is indexed. The test will be how many large servers remain opted in once results actually appear.
