Discord to put some public server messages into Google search
Discord says Discoverable Server pages go live November 16, with some public-channel messages searchable from mid-December. Opt-outs exist for admins and members.

Discord is making some conversations in its largest public servers visible to web search. Every Discoverable Server will get a public Server Web Page starting November 16, and selected messages from public channels may appear in search results beginning in mid-December. 12
What is affected. Only Discoverable Servers are covered: public servers with at least 1,000 members that admins chose to list so anyone can join without an invite. Discord counts more than 63,000 of them. 23 Private servers, DMs and group DMs are excluded. 2 Your guild or friend group almost certainly is not affected. 1
The November 16 pages describe the server and may show summaries of discussions in public channels. 2 From mid-December, some messages may show word for word on those pages and in search engines, without usernames or avatars. 24 Discord says the rollout is gradual, so the first messages could take a few weeks to appear. 2
Why Discord is doing it. The company says forum-style conversations moved into Discord servers, leaving useful answers invisible to the wider internet, and it wants to change that. 2 Anyone who has searched a question and landed on a Reddit thread knows the model.
What you should do. Server admins can opt channels out now, before anything goes live, under Server Settings > Web Presence, choosing which channels take part or opting out of all of them. If nothing is changed, public channels stay on. 2
Members can switch off display of their own messages in User Settings > Data and Privacy. One setting covers Channel Messages in every Discoverable Server. 2 Channel Summaries are generated separately and will still appear on Server Web Pages unless admins turn them off. 2
Seen it before: a default that is on until you find the toggle. The toggle exists, and it takes about a minute.
Regional limits and reaction. In the EU, U.K., Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, the message option is off by default because of legal restrictions, and teen users are excluded. 34 The announcement drew privacy objections from some users, who say posting in a public server does not mean agreeing to be found across the internet. Others asked whether the messages could be used to train AI models. 3 Discord’s own announcement, as quoted in the sources, does not address AI training.
Our read: The controls are real and Discord published them before the changes take effect, which is the right order. The open question is how many members of 63,000 servers will see the notice before mid-December, and how the default-on setting holds up against that. The people most likely to be surprised are regular members who never read a blog post. If you post in a large public server and want to stay out of search, check the setting this week, since it is cheaper to set now than to explain later. 12
