Switch 2 at 26.35 million is a catalog win for owners already in

Nintendo’s latest totals put Switch 2 at 26.35 million hardware and a deep software pile; for people who already own the box, the library is the real scoreboard.

Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide sales have topped 26.35 million units and the original Switch has reached 157.20 million as of September 30, 2026, Nintendo said in its latest earnings. Those are the figures this column is reacting to, and they are the only ones that set the table for what the platform looks like to someone who already owns the hardware.1

My read is straightforward. For players who already bought in, 26.35 million hardware is less a trophy and more a working multiplayer and catalog pool. Lifetime Switch 2 software is already past 73.21 million units. Mario Kart World leads the first-party list at 16.48 million, Donkey Kong Bananza sits at 5.05 million, and the newer wave—Splatoon Raiders at 2.42 million, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave at 1.34 million, Star Fox at 1.17 million—shows fresh releases still clearing a million. Pokemon Legends: Z-A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Pokemon Pokopia are each at 4.04 million. That is attach you can actually play, not a hollow hardware headline.1

The original Switch is still part of the same household math. It added 0.61 million hardware and 31.92 million software in the quarter ended September 30, and lifetime Switch software sits at 1,593.87 million. Nintendo notes that Switch titles keep selling in part because they run on Switch 2, so the older library is not stranded for anyone who moved up.12 Subscription value, as I keep saying on this beat, is measured in what you would actually play. A base this size with software already in the tens of millions is how that value shows up for current owners.

The fair counterpoint is the cost and the pace. Switch 2 hardware for the three months landed at 2.67 million units; first-half hardware was 6.49 million. Back in May, Nintendo raised the U.S. Switch 2 price from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, with parallel hikes in Canada and Europe, citing market conditions and forecasting a softer second-year hardware run. If you are still shopping, that sticker and the slower clip are real.23

What would change this view is clear. If the next report shows software attach rolling over, first-party million-sellers drying up, or hardware demand falling off hard after the price change with no new catalog depth behind it, the library argument weakens and late buyers have less reason to jump. A date and a unit count from Nintendo beat any guess about momentum; until those numbers flip, I am reading this for the people who already own the box.

Our read: Nintendo’s Switch 2 totals at 26.35 million hardware and more than 73 million software, with Switch hardware at 157.20 million, put the live catalog ahead of the next hardware sprint for current owners.1 Standings check: Nintendo posted Switch 2 hardware at 26.35 million and Switch at 157.20 million, with Switch 2 software past 73.21 million. Season’s long, folks.
