Specimen of the week: a tiny planet that is yours to look after, floating in a sea of sky islands called Starsea. That is Petit Planet, a free-to-play intergalactic life sim from Hoyoverse, the studio behind Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. It is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027. 1
The plain facts: the game launches on PC, iOS and Android on December 4, 2026, and the Switch 2 version follows in 2027. It is free to play. 1
What sets it apart is the shape of the world. You start by tending your own planet, then head out to explore the small islands around Starsea. There is also a hub called the Galactic Bazaar, which holds in-game auctions and community features. A recent Hoyoverse update also showed off the neighbors you can meet, the home decor tools and some of the mini-games. 1
Field note: pre-registration prizes are on offer, and a “Launch a Planet” event started on the game’s official website on November 1. 1
IGN played about five hours of a closed beta preview and described it as a take on Animal Crossing: New Horizons with a Little Prince theme, with an emphasis on clear progression and multiplayer. 1 That is the writer’s comparison, not ours, but it tells you who this is for: anyone who likes decorating a home, trading with neighbors and a gentle pace.
Our read: a 2027 window gives Switch 2 owners a long runway, and the free-to-play model means trying it on another platform first costs nothing. We would watch how the progression and multiplayer hold up at launch, since IGN’s preview flagged potential caveats there. 1
Worth knowing: free to play, launching December 4 on PC, iOS and Android, with Switch 2 in 2027. 1
