Village in the Shade brings spooky secrets to a hand-painted farm

Village in the Shade, a hand-painted farming sim set in a Japanese mountain village, is out now on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.

Specimen of the week: a farming sim whose own tagline comes with a warning label. “Enjoy quiet countryside living…as long as you follow the rules.” That one line is why Village in the Shade caught my eye.

Here is what it is. The game is a hand-painted farming simulation set in Kagatsu, a Japanese mountain village with plenty of secrets. You plant crops, customize your homestead, and meet a cast of characters who all have something to hide.1

The plain facts: NIS America publishes it, and it is out now on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.2 The store page lists an October 27, 2026 release date, a 5.4 GB file size, and TV, tabletop and handheld play. It is a single-player game. The store page also lists a separate Art Book & Soundtrack add-on at $19.99.1 The ESRB rating is for blood, language, use of alcohol and tobacco, and violence, which tells you the cozy surface is not the whole story.1

What sets it apart is that tension. Most farming sims want you relaxed. This one asks you to follow rules while everyone around you keeps secrets. One player on X put it neatly, saying they love the contrast between cozy farm and spooky lore so far.2 That is a single early reaction, not a verdict, but it matches what the publisher’s description promises.

The tags also list character customization and a choice of difficulty, so you can shape how hard the village pushes back.1

Field note: the store lists Nintendo Account family-group lending and Save Data Cloud support through Nintendo Switch Online, handy if the household shares one console.1

Who is it for? Anyone who likes crop rows and cozy routines but wants a little unease with their harvest.

Our read: Pairing a calm, painted countryside with a village full of secrets is a smart hook for a crowded genre. I have not played it, so I cannot say how well it delivers. The premise alone makes it worth a look.

Worth knowing: it is available now on the Nintendo store page.2
