Soulframe opens to all on November 6, and its devs admit they're nervous
Digital Extremes will drop the key requirement for Soulframe's alpha on November 6, alongside an update that corrupts the game's cozy world with region-purging missions.

Hot off the wire: Soulframe, Digital Extremes’ free-to-play fantasy RPG, opens to every PC player on Friday, November 6, ending two years of closed alpha. 12 No more begging for a key at the door.
The open alpha, called Open Preludes, is a free download from the official game website, not Steam. 32 Digital Extremes says it wants more players now because their feedback will steer where the game goes. 2 The studio’s own phrase for the moment: it feels “a little scary” to open the gates. 2
The bigger story is what players will find inside. Update 17, Verse of the Veilands, lands in November and rearranges the world. 32 After finishing the Tormented Stag quest, players see the land choked by siphons from the invading Ode faction. 12 Complete votives, the game’s missions, to build energy and learn each region’s song, then cleanse the place. 13 Clean regions return to the familiar look, with fishing and fresh resources. 1
Here’s the twist. The developers say they’re anxious about it. Creative director Geoff Crookes said he and lead designer Scott McGregor were “nervous” about the aesthetic shift, since players have praised the game for being cozy and beautiful. 13 First impressions will be harsher and more unforgiving. 13
Why do it anyway? McGregor said many players finished the opening story quests, got lost and quit, asking what to do next. 1 The purge system gives newcomers a directed path before the open world reopens. 1 Crookes thinks it pairs well with an open alpha. 1
The update also brings a rideable wolf. Feed your wolf pup a Bairnday Biscuit, brewed after finishing its training and purifying two Veilands regions, and it grows into an Omen Wolf mount. 2 There’s a new Pact, the Ode Shrike, built around spike traps, bola chains and balloon darts that lift enemies skyward. 12 The seasonal Bita’s Eve event returns too. 2
The paid Founders program stays as is. 1 Digital Extremes will likely keep running closed preview builds beside the open one, and is looking at letting players reset their characters to try new content. 1
Our read: Opening the doors and darkening the world in the same week is a gutsy play. The studio is trading charm for direction, betting new arrivals need a trail more than a lullaby. The developers’ own nerves tell me they know the risk. If the cleansed regions deliver the cozy payoff, this works. If the early hours feel bleak, the flood of fresh players will say so loudly. I’ll be watching the feedback.
The door opens Friday. Bring a torch.
