Soulframe opens its doors to all on November 6, then gets a violent rebuild

After three years of invite-only playtests, the Warframe team's fantasy action RPG goes open alpha next week, with a major restructuring update due later in November.

Soulframe, the fantasy action RPG from the Warframe developers at Digital Extremes, has spent three years behind invite-only playtests. On November 6 it opens to everyone as an open alpha. 1

The facts the sources give: it is a fantasy action RPG from the Warframe team, and the open alpha begins November 6. No price or platform list appears in the material I have, so check the Soulframe site before you go hunting for a download. 1

What makes it different is what happens next. Later in November, an update called Verse of the Veilands will rework the structure of the game. Midrath, the big open landmass, will be corrupted, and your job is to restore it. Creative director Geoff Crookes warns players will enter a game that is “much more unforgiving and harsh at first glance.” 1

The reason is onboarding. Feedback from players who struggled to reach the point where they could explore freely convinced the team to build a more direct intro. The main quest will teach you to stop the siphons draining the world’s color, enemies and resources will shift as each zone is restored, and side activities like fishing unlock along the way. You can also raise a wolf pup into a mount. 1

Field note: faction leaders will get pages of new writing and will radio in to tell you the world’s history, so the lore arrives as voices in your ear rather than text walls. A new hunter-style Pact is coming too, with a bola, a cone of spikes, and a giant balloon attached to enemies. 1

Lead designer Scott McGregor called it “one of the biggest, most violent changes” to the game’s structure in a long while. The update may not be finished on schedule, and the team aims to ship before the end of next month, so newcomers may prefer to wait for it. 1

Our read: If you enjoy action RPGs and don’t mind alpha rough edges, the open alpha is a fair place to start scouting. If you want the guided version, wait for Verse of the Veilands.
