Specimen of the day: three tiny Pikmin, red, blue and yellow, lined up as a “1.” That is how Shigeru Miyamoto explained the date. The first Pikmin game, released on GameCube in 2001, debuted those three colors, so November 1 is now Pikmin Day, an annual event.1

This is a first-party Nintendo story, not an indie one, but it holds a lesson small teams know well: a demo is the best marketing there is. Nintendo’s own Pikmin Day pitch is a free taste.

Playable now or very soon

A free demo of Pikmin 4 - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy arrives on November 2, 2026. It includes the opening area, Sunspeckled Terrace, plus two stages of Dandori Academy, and save data carries over to the full game.1 The full release is November 12, 2026.1

The Switch 2 Edition adds voice commands for Oatchi through the built-in mic. Dandori Academy is a new mode with challenges, treasure collecting and an exam that earns you medals based on your performance.1

Nintendo also announced a Treehouse broadcast for the game on its official YouTube channel. The source gives no start time.1

Coming later

Pikmin Bloom on mobile gets a “Secret Caves” update in Winter 2026. You send Pikmin into caves to battle creatures and win treasure, using Cave Maps attached to postcards. More in-app maps unlock by taking exams in Pikmin 4’s Dandori Academy.1

A new animated short series, “Hello! Pikmin,” from Nintendo Pictures and Miyamoto, started with an episode in the Direct. Two more arrive this month on the Nintendo Today! app and other Nintendo channels, then one per month from December.1

Field note: the Direct is on YouTube, so you can catch the shorts and the demo details in one sitting.

Our read: The demo is the clever part. Nintendo has a game coming in under two weeks, and it is letting people play the opening hour first. The Bloom link, where Pikmin 4 exams unlock maps in a phone game, hints at a bigger plan to keep Pikmin in rotation every year, not just on launch day. We would play the Sunspeckled Terrace demo before deciding anything else.

Worth knowing: the demo is free on Nintendo Switch 2 starting November 2, and the full Pikmin 4 - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy launches November 12.1
