Windows 11 can now reinstall itself from the cloud, no USB drive needed

Microsoft's Cloud Rebuild feature wipes a broken Windows 11 install and downloads a fresh OS and drivers from Windows Update, even when the PC won't boot.

Microsoft has added a Cloud Rebuild feature to Windows 11 that can reinstall the operating system from the internet, with no recovery USB drive required. It arrives with the KB5127936 update.1

The feature does a full reinstall. It downloads both the target Windows image and the device’s drivers from Windows Update, so the machine comes back working without a custom image or secondary boot media.2 Because it does not lean on the installed system, it also works when that system is too damaged to start.12

A technical term worth a plain definition: WinRE, the Windows Recovery Environment, is the small repair system that lives alongside Windows and takes over when things go wrong. Cloud Rebuild runs inside it.2

How you start it

If Windows still boots, go to Settings > System > Recovery and select Rebuild PC. The device restarts into recovery and begins.2 If Windows cannot start, the machine drops into recovery automatically after repeated boot failures, and you choose Troubleshoot, then Cloud rebuild.2 IT administrators can also trigger it remotely through tools such as Microsoft Intune, using the Recovery CSP.2

The tool connects over Ethernet automatically. If only Wi-Fi is available, it asks you to pick a WPA-Personal network and enter the passkey.2 It then contacts Windows Update to determine the target build and fetch networking drivers.2

You then choose how files are removed. “Remove files” is faster, but files might be recoverable with specialized tools. “Remove & sanitize files” takes longer and is meant for a PC you are recycling, returning or reassigning. On multi-disk machines you can sanitize only the Windows disk or all of them.2

What you should do

Understand that this is a wipe. Cloud Rebuild reformats the system disk and removes locally stored files, accounts, apps and settings. Data in cloud services such as OneDrive is not affected, and sanitizing is irreversible.2 Back up anything local first, while you still can. Afterward the device goes through the out-of-box setup, and managed machines can re-provision through Autopilot, Intune, Backup for Organizations and OneDrive.2

There are prerequisites. The PC must run Windows 11, meet its minimum hardware requirements, and have a healthy recovery environment, which you can check with reagentc /info from an elevated command prompt. The manufacturer must also have included a compatible networking driver in recovery, and the device must be able to reach the internet from there.2

Seen it before

A recovery tool that needs a working network driver to fetch the thing that fixes your network is a classic chicken-and-egg problem. Microsoft’s own prerequisites list is, in effect, an admission of it.

Our read: This removes a real chore: hunting for a USB stick you may never have made. It also sidesteps a corrupted install, which is often what a failed boot means. The weak point is the dependency on the network, so before you need it, check that your PC’s recovery environment can actually get online. Microsoft’s documentation describes the steps but not how many machines meet the networking-driver requirement, and that is the number to watch.
