Nvidia and AMD put $4 billion into Meta as AI spending climbs

Nvidia will invest $3 billion and AMD $1 billion in Meta's stock sale, tying two GPU makers more closely to one of their biggest data center customers.

Nvidia and AMD will put a combined $4 billion into Meta Platforms, with Nvidia investing $3 billion and AMD $1 billion. Both are buying shares in Meta’s new stock sale, which is meant to pay for AI infrastructure.1

Meta said on Monday that it plans to raise $95 billion in total. It will start with $35 billion in underwritten public equity offerings, then add $60 billion through what it calls an at-the-market program.1 Meta also said Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom were interested in buying up to $5 billion in shares between them, which would leave roughly $1 billion for Broadcom.2

Here is what is physically in the racks. Nvidia says Meta will expand its use of Vera Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs. The two chips often ship together in Nvidia’s DGX Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, each with 72 GPUs and 36 CPUs.2 Meta will also buy more of Nvidia’s Spectrum-X Ethernet networking gear, including SuperNICs, the chips that connect a server to the data center network.2

AMD’s side is a rack design called Helios, which also holds 72 GPUs and is built on its Instinct MI450 architecture, Epyc CPUs and Pensando data processing units.2 Meta has deployed an initial batch of Helios racks, is testing them, and plans more soon. Down the road, Meta will use a custom AI accelerator based on AMD’s Instinct design.2 AMD says its Epyc processors are powering Muse, Meta’s AI agent, which launched last month.1

The money trail is circular. Nvidia is investing in a customer that buys its chips, a pattern it is repeating widely. Nvidia has put money into OpenAI, Anthropic, Intel and xAI and joined 121 funding rounds this year, up from 13 in 2022, according to Dealroom.1 AMD said in July it would invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic and has joined 25 rounds this year, up from two in 2022.1

Nvidia has reason to keep the spending going. Its last quarter brought in $96.2 billion in revenue, more than double a year earlier, and data center sales were over 90% of it.3 Meta was already a heavy buyer: in February it said it would deploy millions of Nvidia Blackwell and Vera Rubin GPUs.3 The new announcement does not say how many extra chips Meta will buy or what they are worth.3

Markets shrugged. AMD shares rose 3% on Tuesday, Nvidia was flat and Meta fell 1%.1

The PC Gamer report that prompted this story frames the deals as companies egging each other on to bet more on AI.4 The details are thin on one point: nothing in the announcements ties this money to gaming graphics cards.

Our read: Both chipmakers are now financing the demand for their own data center silicon, and that keeps their attention on server products like Vera Rubin and Helios. Gaming GPUs are a separate line, but they come from the same companies, so I would watch whether their priorities shift as these partnerships deepen.

On the bench: if you are shopping for a graphics card, nothing in these deals changes what is on shelves today. The things to keep an eye on are Nvidia’s and AMD’s own earnings, where the data center share of sales shows where their engineering and production effort is going.
