Suda51 says Travis Touchdown will return for No More Heroes anniversary

Grasshopper’s Suda51 says he and Marvelous are planning something special for No More Heroes’ 20th anniversary next year, with Travis Touchdown definitely coming back.

The specimen this week is one hard line from Suda51: Travis Touchdown is coming back. Grasshopper Manufacture CEO Goichi Suda, speaking in a Famitsu interview, said Grasshopper and publisher Marvelous Entertainment are planning something to mark No More Heroes’ 20th anniversary next year, and he put the series lead back on the board without hesitation.1

No More Heroes first released in Japan on December 6, 2007, and reached the West in 2008. When Famitsu raised the coming anniversary, Suda replied that Marvelous is well aware of it and that the two sides would like to do something together for the milestone. He said they are planning to deliver something special and asked players to look forward to it.1

“Travis Touchdown is definitely coming back!” Suda said, via machine translation.1

He offered no further detail on what the project is. A sequel, a remaster, a remake, or something other than a game all remain possible on the record. The series includes three main No More Heroes games and one spin-off, Travis Strikes Again. Each launched on Nintendo platforms first before later ports to other formats.1

Field note: ahead of No More Heroes 3 in 2022, Suda had called that entry Travis’s last battle, then added that nobody could say what might happen years later. If there were a big fan outcry, he said, Travis might return, comparing it to Tom Cruise coming back as Maverick. The new remarks move from that conditional to a joint plan already in motion with Marvelous.1

Grasshopper’s last game was Romeo is a Dead Man. In September the studio announced it had officially become independent from former parent NetEase Games. The studio pointed to improved self-publishing know-how, a broader range of publishing options, and a commitment to unique titles with its signature flavor as it heads toward its own 30th anniversary and beyond.1

Worth knowing: no format, platform, price, or release window for the anniversary project has been named. What stands is the promise of something special and a definite return for Travis.

Our read: Saying Travis is definitely coming back, with Marvelous already aligned on an anniversary plan, is a clearer signal than the 2022 “maybe if fans shout” door left ajar. Independence from NetEase may give Grasshopper more say in how that return lands. The words on record still fit a new game or a non-game tribute alike; the first reveal that names the format is what will lock the shape.
