OpenCAGE, the Alien: Isolation mod toolkit, hits version 1.0 after years of work

OpenCAGE, a free community toolkit built by Matt Filer, reaches 1.0 with editors for levels, scripts, models, animations and more for Alien: Isolation.

Specimen for the notebook: a free toolkit that lets you fly a camera through any Alien: Isolation level, click on a prop, and find the exact script that controls it. OpenCAGE has just reached version 1.0, and it is the kind of community project that turns a finished horror game into a workshop.

The facts: OpenCAGE is a hobby project developed by Matt Filer, listed on Steam as free to play under the utilities category, and it first appeared there on January 23, 2025. 1 It is not affiliated with Creative Assembly, SEGA or Feral Interactive, and you must own and install Alien: Isolation to use it. 2 PC Gamer’s report on the 1.0 release says the project took almost a decade. 3 The tools are open source, with the code on GitHub. 2

Here is what sets it apart: the breadth. The Steam page describes custom missions, modes, characters, weapons and maps, with import, export and customisation of models, materials, textures, sounds, animations, scripts, configurations, UI and behaviour trees. 1 The project’s own site backs that up with a long list of editors. There is a 3D viewport, a flowgraph view of the game’s scripts, a curve editor for keyframes, and a model editor with a scale check for your own imports. 2

My favourite detail is the debugging. A Live Link feature connects the tools to the running game, so you can place props, change lights and tweak scripts without reloading. 2 Debug text and position markers can be put on screen in game, and you can set breakpoints on script nodes to step through them. 2 There is a free camera with camera tracks for filming cinematic shots, and a launch option that lets you possess characters in a level. 2 Alien: Isolation’s creature behaviour is driven by behaviour trees, and the toolkit lets you open and edit them node by node. 2

The tools have also been proving themselves for a while. A 2023 update added imports of custom models, textures and animations, and Matt Filer demonstrated it by dropping Counter-Strike’s de_dust2 into the game in around 15 minutes. 4 Rock Paper Shotgun said it was excited to see what modders would make. 4 The Steam page also quotes Perfect Organism calling OpenCAGE the basis for some of the best Alien: Isolation mods. 1

Who is it for? Anyone who already owns Alien: Isolation and has ever wanted to rewire it, from tinkerers who want to retune a script to ambitious builders who want a new level with generated lighting, navmesh and cover. 2 There is a Mod Manager so players can install, combine and update what you make. 2 The Steam page links documentation, and a Discord community is there for questions and showing off creations. 1

Field note: the Steam page lists minimum requirements of Windows 7 (64-bit) and 4 GB of RAM, so it should run on modest machines. 1

Our read: A toolkit this deep, built by one person and kept alive for years, is the story behind a lot of the best fan-made content. The modding scene around this game now has the tools to match its ambition.

Worth knowing: OpenCAGE is free on Steam at https://store.steampowered.com/, and you need a copy of Alien: Isolation installed. 12
