Mouthwashing, the indie horror hit, heads to Sony's film slate and to consoles

Sony has bought the film rights to Mouthwashing, with Karyn Kusama directing, just as the game lands on consoles and Xbox Game Pass for Halloween.

Darlings, the spotlight has swung toward a tiny horror game with a very big week. Mouthwashing, the 2024 indie chiller, now has a Sony film deal in hand and a console launch on the calendar, and it arrives right in time for Halloween.

The facts, plainly: the game comes from developer Wrong Organ and publisher Critical Reflex, and it is a horror title in the action-adventure mold. It first launched on PC and is now available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, including Xbox Game Pass. 1 The sources give no price.

The film news is the glittering part. Sony has secured the movie rights from the studio and publisher, with Karyn Kusama, known for Yellowjackets, set to direct. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay are writing, and Crooked Highway, the production company behind The Black Phone, is on board. 1 No cast has been named, and nobody has said whether the movie will follow the game’s story. 1

What makes the game worth a curtsy? It sold more than 500,000 copies on PC alone as of February 2025, and it was a critically acclaimed release. 1 That is a remarkable showing for an independent horror project, and it explains why a studio came calling. Wrong Organ is already looking ahead, too: its next game, Carcass Clad, is a co-op tank horror title announced at the PC Gaming Show. 1

There is also a cheerful precedent for the screen. The Iron Lung movie, an indie horror adaptation from Markiplier, brought in $21m globally soon after its premiere. 1

Who is it for? Horror fans looking for a Halloween pick, and anyone with Game Pass who wants to see what the fuss is about before the film arrives. Read more of our coverage in Sony picks up Mouthwashing for a film, with Karyn Kusama to direct.

Our read: A small team’s horror game reaching consoles, a Game Pass slot and a Sony film deal in one week is the kind of rise I love to applaud. The real question is whether the movie keeps the game’s narrative shape, and I will be watching for casting news.
