Firefly Studios delays Stronghold 4 Early Access to April 2027

Firefly Studios has moved Stronghold 4 Early Access on PC via Steam from December 7, 2026 to April 20, 2027, citing polish, feedback, and a fuller launch build.

Specimen of the week: a studio head who delays Early Access and still apologizes to the one player whose birthday matched the old date, offering April 20 as a second birthday. Stronghold 4 is a real-time strategy and city builder sequel from Firefly Studios, and that note is how the slip arrived.

Firefly has shifted Early Access from December 7, 2026 to April 20, 2027. It will be available for PC via Steam.1

Studio head Nick Tannahill said the team is taking more time after Next Fest feedback on skirmish and free build missions, that some design work simply ran long, and that the new window dodges a crowded holiday slate. The extra months also pull the economic campaign—once planned as a later Early Access update—into the first build. Tannahill put the priority in plain words: “Sim and economic gameplay is at the heart of Stronghold.”1

Day-one Early Access is now meant to include a full story campaign, custom skirmish, a skirmish trail, free build, and that economic campaign, with further additions after launch. Firefly plans deep-dive videos on castle customization, economy, story, siegecraft, villages, weather, and more, and is pointing players to the Steam wishlist for feature and launch notices.1

Field note: this is for players who want the simulation side present when the doors open, not weeks later. Worth knowing: Early Access is set for April 20, 2027 on Steam.

Our read: Sliding past the holidays to ship the economic campaign on day one is a clear trade of calendar heat for first-build scope. What to watch is how much of the Next Fest feedback lands before April, and whether the post-launch runway still leaves room for the polish Firefly wants before version 1.0—the same Early Access patience pressure other small teams keep navigating in our recent EA column.
