PlayStation is offering up to $400 for a standard PS5 and two controllers through notifications in its mobile app, with the money sent directly to a bank account.1
Some owners who have the PlayStation app received the alerts. The development was first spotted by ResetEra user Jay_Horror; this account rests on IGN’s report of those notifications.1
A new standard PS5 currently sells for $600 to $650, depending on whether it includes a disc drive. The PS5 Pro lists at $900. Demand in the lead-up to GTA 6 has made Pro units hard to find at retail price, and resellers and GameStop have sold used PS5 Pros for as much as $1,400.1
The console launched at $500. For someone who already owns a standard PS5, bought before prices rose, and is not using it, $400 back with two controllers is a concrete cash figure against that original outlay.1
Trade-in programs are familiar from retailers such as GameStop around the holidays, but a platform holder reaching owners directly this way is less common.1
Owner trade-in outreach also surfaced in our recent Xbox coverage.
IGN notes the offer may point to a hardware shortage or interest in pre-owned stock that can be sold below new prices.1
Our read: For players sitting on a spare standard PS5, the platform is putting a direct bank-deposit number on the table that late-cycle PS4 trade-ins rarely matched. Standings check: PlayStation is offering up to $400 via its app for a standard PS5 and two controllers. Season’s long on what the stock is for.
