Phantom Blade Zero storms Steam, but outlets can't agree on the peak

Hot off the wire: Phantom Blade Zero hit the street October 29 on PS5 and PC, and Steam lit up like a pinball table. The numbers are big. They just aren’t the same number everywhere.
The peak concurrent count on Steam depends on who you ask and when they asked. One outlet pegged it at 431,541 via SteamDB hours after launch.1 Another cited 448,000 a few hours in.2 Techtimes put it at 500,000 within hours.3 Kotaku, writing less than 24 hours after release, reported it had passed 700,000 and ranked it the 15th most-played game at launch ever on Steam.4 Same game, same platform, different clocks. The sensible read is that the count climbed as the day went on, so the later figure is the one I’d trust. Sony doesn’t publish PS5 player numbers, so the true total is higher still.2
Even the low end is serious. At the time of the early counts it sat second only to Counter-Strike 2 among Steam’s most-played games and led the global top sellers chart.12 It also topped Steam by revenue.2
The reviews back the crowd. Critics singled out the combat as exceptional, with fast, fluid mechanics, and one chart ranked it the best action game of 2026.35 Scores run wide, from perfect marks at PCGamesN and Wccftech down to a 60 from Eurogamer, which lamented a lack of polish and pace-breaking boss fights.31 The friction points are technical blemishes, frame-rate wobble and thin quest direction. PS5 Pro owners had the roughest ride in at least one review.3 Early Steam user reviews sat at Mostly Positive.1
The sales ran hot before launch too. Alinea Analytics estimated 850,000 combined Steam and PlayStation Store pre-sales, and analyst Rhys Elliott put the total well above one million once Tencent’s WeGame in China is counted.31 Nearly two thirds of prelaunch sales came from China, Taiwan or Hong Kong.2 S-GAME has not published official sales figures.3
Nobody is calling it the next Black Myth: Wukong, which peaked at 2,415,714 concurrent players on Steam in 2024.1 Consultant Daniel Camilo argues Phantom Blade Zero isn’t a mainstream cultural phenomenon even in China the way Wukong was.4 S-GAME has already pushed a 5GB first patch aimed at performance on weaker hardware.4
Our read: The peak figure is a moving target, so quote the outlet and the hour, not just the number. What’s solid is the pattern: strong combat reviews, a big day-one crowd, and a studio fixing performance fast. The real test is the weekend, when word of mouth either holds the crowd or lets it drain. Case open, pal.
