Hot off the wire: Nightdive is bringing back the trapezoid big box for a special edition of Thief: Remastered. Preorders for the physical editions are opening now. Partner Clear River Games is in on the run. The high-end package is limited to Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PlayStation 5.1

That shape is no random cardboard stunt. The original 1990s Thief PC release shipped in a trapezoidal big box unlike the standard rectangles on the shelf. The form stayed visually sharp. It became a sought-after collector piece and a marker of PC gaming history.

The special edition is an homage to that original packaging. Nightdive and Clear River are not offering the same trapezoid treatment on PC. Skipping a PC physical SKU is fairly common now, including on boutique indie special editions. Some studios still ship PC boxes; Baldur’s Gate 3 is one recent case that did. Thief’s first box remains tied to the PC side of the ledger, which is why the platform split stands out on this title.1

This account rests on PC Gamer’s report. The remaster itself is still due December 3. Nightdive is the studio handling the update. The physical preorder wave covers the console special edition at the high end alongside other physical editions now opening up.1

For players who kept the old trapezoid on a shelf, the new run puts the silhouette back in print. For players who want that silhouette next to a PC install, the current list of platforms does not include one. Standard digital and other physical paths remain the routes on the calendar already set.1

Our read: The console-only trapezoid is a clean nod to a famous PC box that still leaves the original platform without that SKU. Physical PC editions still ship when a publisher green-lights them; this one did not. The December 3 date is locked for the remaster either way. What to watch is whether collector demand later pulls a PC big-box run, or whether Switch, Switch 2, and PS5 remain the only homes for the shape. The sources stop at the platforms on offer now.
