GOG will hold its first games showcase on November 5. The digital storefront said the event will announce new games and features headed to the service. The date marks the store’s 18th anniversary.1

The program is set to cover updates on titles joining the catalog and fresh work to keep older games playable on modern hardware. A short teaser on GOG’s YouTube channel makes plain that the showcase will stay with older games. That points to more DRM-free classic re-releases on PC.1

Every title on GOG ships without DRM. Buyers can play offline and without a launcher. The offline files stay with the customer, though that still does not mean legal ownership of the game. Many publishers skip a GOG release at launch for that reason.1

The store regularly brings back older games that have otherwise become hard to obtain through legitimate channels. GOG recently said it would like to re-release the 1992 strategy title Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis. Licensing remains a barrier because multiple companies hold rights to the name.1

On the GOG site, users vote for games they want added. Black & White from Lionhead Studios leads that list with 138,473 community votes. Other high requests include the first two Silent Hill games, Fable 2 and The Simpsons: Hit & Run. Copyright issues hold many of those titles back.1

Our read: Eighteen years in, GOG is putting its day-to-day preservation work on a stage for the first time. The wishlist totals are public. What actually lands on the store after the stream will be the number that counts.
