FromSoftware takes Dark Souls 2 and 3 multiplayer offline over 'server issue'

FromSoftware has shut down invasions, co-op and messages in Dark Souls 2 and 3 on every platform, blaming a 'server issue' and giving no timeline.

What changed: FromSoftware has pulled the multiplayer servers for Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 offline, killing invasions, co-op and player messages in both games. The studio announced it in an October 30 post on X, calling it a “server issue” and describing the shutdown as temporary. 1

The closure covers every platform for each game, not just PC. The studio has not said what the problem is or how long the servers will stay down. It said only that it would share an updated timeline for restoration once it has more information. 1

This is not the first time FromSoftware’s back catalogue has gone dark. Back in early 2022, right before Elden Ring launched, a serious remote code execution vulnerability turned up across the Dark Souls games, and PC servers for the series stayed shut for months. 1

This outage looks different on paper. It hits only the second and third games, though it reaches all platforms instead of just PC. That gives me some hope the problem is smaller and the fix quicker, but that is my read, not anything the studio has said. 1

There is one bright spot for PC players. The Seamless Co-op mods from modder Yui run on their own servers, separate from the official ones, so anyone who installs the mod can keep playing together. Dark Souls 2 got its Seamless Co-op version at the end of September, and the Dark Souls 3 version has been out for a while. 1

The mod lets friends play through an entire game together with shared progress and no disconnects when someone dies or a boss falls. 1

What it costs you: if you own either game, you lose invasions, official co-op summoning and messages until the servers return, with no date promised. PC players have the mod workaround. Everyone else is waiting on the studio’s next update.

Our read: A temporary label and a promise of a timeline is a fair start, but a start is all it is. FromSoftware owes players a reason and a date, and the fact that the outage spans every platform is the detail I would watch. Standings check: FromSoftware is behind for players this week, with two multiplayer games dark and no restoration date posted, while the Seamless Co-op mod keeps PC fans in the game.
