Blizzard sets WoW Forever to a four-month update beat

Blizzard says World of Warcraft Forever will get major patches roughly every four months, with smaller unlocks in between, a slower pace than retail's eight-week cycle.

Hot off the wire: Blizzard has told players how often World of Warcraft Forever will get new content. The answer is slow and steady. Major updates are planned about every four months, or 17 weeks, roughly three a year. 1

That comes from principal game designer Kris Zierhut, who said the team is “fairly convinced” that rate is correct. 1 The game launches November 4, and the roadmap shown at BlizzCon puts the first major update in spring 2027. 1 If the four-month target holds, that lands around March. 1

The pace is a deliberate break from modern retail WoW, which has run an eight-week content cycle since Dragonflight arrived in 2022. 1 Some players say those updates feel rushed, with bugs and repeated content. 1 Zierhut said Blizzard tried a faster schedule in Season of Discovery, then cut it to eight or 10 weeks, and it “felt way, way, way too fast.” 1

The other danger is the opposite one. Zierhut said going six or eight months with nothing new “always feels bad.” 1 Old expansions knew the drought well: patch 6.2 in Warlords of Draenor, with Hellfire Citadel, ran 13 months before the Legion prepatch. 1

So a four-month gap does not mean four months of waiting. Blizzard plans content that unlocks between the major patches, perhaps one, two or three months in. 1 Think of a time-event calendar that opens things up gradually, not a content fire hose followed by silence. 1

The schedule is a plan, not a promise, and I have seen plenty of plans die before the second patch.

Our read: Blizzard is betting on a middle road between retail’s treadmill and the long dry spells of old expansions. The staggered unlocks are the clever part, since they keep a four-month gap from feeling empty. The real test comes when the first major update is due in spring. Until then, it’s all talk, pal.
