Blizzard calls WoW Forever controller support a first step toward playing anywhere

Blizzard says gamepad support in World of Warcraft: Forever is the opening move toward playing on more devices; no console version has been confirmed.

Blizzard says the native controller support in World of Warcraft: Forever is the first leg of a longer plan to make the MMO playable on more than a desktop or laptop PC. A console version has not been announced. 1

Executive producer and vice president for World of Warcraft Holly Longdale laid out the thinking when asked whether a PC-only launch was a missed chance, given what a gamepad could unlock. Her answer: “Play it wherever you want and, at some point, on whatever you want.” 12

She called getting gamepads working well with the game “the first leg of that journey,” and said Forever, set for release on November 4, was the right place to start. 13

Now the Xbox angle, and it needs careful handling. Longdale pointed to where the industry is heading when talking about Xbox’s Project Helix, saying platforms may become “a bit more ubiquitous.” 1 Helix is widely expected to be a console and PC hybrid that plays previous-generation Xbox games alongside PC games, possibly from stores beyond Microsoft’s own, but that is expectation, not a confirmed spec. 1

The handheld side is already on Blizzard’s radar. Longdale said players have gotten the game working on the ROG Ally X, and that the gamepad work should give players flexibility that “goes beyond consoles.” 1

The controller work itself is built to coexist with the usual setup. Lead software engineer Nora Valletta says you can swap between keyboard and mouse and a controller seamlessly, even plugging a pad into a desktop mid-session. Xbox and PlayStation controllers are supported. 3 Blizzard’s own framing is player choice: Forever also offers an SD/HD character model toggle and a choice between a classic mode and a lower-friction approach at the start. 3

Blizzard has also said the controller layout was tested heavily in-house. Friendly targeting sits on the left bumper and enemy targeting on the right, with most spells and attacks mapped to the d-pad and face buttons. 3 Beta access begins September 17 for buyers of the Skyborne Epic Pack or the Warcraft Forever Collection, according to Blizzard’s pre-purchase page. 4

What it costs you: Forever access comes with a World of Warcraft subscription or game time, and the upgrade editions are optional extras. 4 If you own a handheld PC or are eyeing Helix, controller support is the groundwork for playing on the couch. It is not a promise of a console release.

Our read: Treat the Helix talk as a hint of direction, and keep an eye out for an official announcement before counting a console version as real.
