Microsoft’s 25 free Xbox games reward Windows 11 buyers already shopping

Microsoft’s Xbox 25th-anniversary bundle of 25 free games on eligible new Windows 11 PCs is real value for holiday and handheld buyers, not a gift for everyone else.

Microsoft is attaching a 25 Years of Xbox bundle—25 free PC games—to eligible new Windows 11 PC purchases this holiday, and that is the board move this column answers.12 Shoppers already weighing a Windows 11 box or qualifying handheld, including the budget configs we tracked in Microsoft’s 8GB Windows 11 lab gains, now get permanent licenses in the deal, not another temporary trial.

The offer runs on qualifying new machines bought in the United States between November 2, 2026, and December 31, 2026. Microsoft values the set at over $500 and frames it as an Xbox 25th-anniversary pack. Titles called out across the reporting include The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Minecraft Dungeons, Gears of War: Reloaded, Call of Duty: WWII, and The Elder Scrolls Online. Some of the free games also play on Xbox Series X|S through Xbox Play Anywhere, so the licenses are not locked to the new PC alone.34

My point is narrow and player-first: this is a buyer’s bonus for people who were already going to purchase, including qualifying handhelds. Subscription value is measured in what you would actually play. A permanent catalog drop of fan-favorite Xbox and Bethesda games beats another month of a service you might cancel, provided those are games you would load. Anyone who already owns a Windows PC or Xbox and is not buying a new eligible machine gets nothing new on the scoreboard. The real standings still run through the people who already own the hardware.

Eligibility is the check that keeps the promo honest. Qualifying devices are select Windows Home PCs from participating Microsoft and OEM lines, plus qualifying handhelds; the only Windows Pro exception Microsoft lists is certain NVIDIA RTX Spark devices. Refurbished, open-box, returned, and demo units are out. After activation, the bundle shows in the Microsoft Store app under Included with device no later than November 30, 2026, and must be claimed by February 12, 2027, on the Microsoft account used on that PC. Handhelds that boot into Xbox mode need a hop to the Windows desktop first. Licenses stay with the claiming account; ESRB ratings and family settings still apply.2

Best counterpoint, answered straight: the list skews older, the $500 figure is stacked list pricing, the window is US-only, and Pro buyers are mostly shut out. Fair. If Skyrim, Halo Anniversary, and Age of Empires II are already on your shelf—or if you need a non-qualifying Pro SKU—the bundle is wallpaper, not value. Performance and features still vary by device, and a game that will not run well on your handheld simply sits in the library until you use another compatible PC on the same account.24

What would change my mind is a swap from permanent licenses to time-limited access, a list padded with titles most buyers never finish, or handhelds left off the eligible sheet. None of that is on the page. Claim before that February date hits like a trade deadline, and only if you were buying the PC anyway.

Our read: Microsoft adds 25 permanent Xbox PC games to qualifying new Windows 11 purchases for the holiday window, including eligible handhelds; existing owners who are not buying new hardware are not in this promo. Season’s long, folks.
