Xbox says demand tops supply as hardware sales fall 14%

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma says console sales are constrained by supply, even as hardware sales fell 14% and Microsoft pushes a refurbishment program and trade-ins.

Xbox is telling the market it can’t build enough Series X|S consoles, and the scoreboard says hardware sales dropped 14% in the quarter ending September 30. Those two facts don’t sit comfortably together.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma addressed it after Microsoft’s earnings report. “Console sales remain constrained by supply, with more demand than consoles available,” she posted on X. She added that Xbox is working to get more consoles to players, including through an expanded refurbishment program. 12

Here is the tension. Microsoft’s financials show Xbox hardware revenue falling 14% year over year, which Eurogamer reports was driven by a lower volume of consoles sold. 32 Overall Xbox revenue declined 2%, an improvement on the 10% drop the prior quarter. 2 If demand outstrips supply, fewer units shipped explains the dip. But some observers aren’t buying the framing. In the U.S., consoles are frequently in stock on Xbox’s website and at online retailers, and a buyer there could order one without much trouble. 1 One Xbox-focused account on X, @eXtas1stv, argued that claims of supply limits don’t match what customers see outside the U.S., Europe included. That is one account’s view, not a confirmed finding. 1

The source of any global shortage is the AI-driven RAM crunch, which is forecast to worsen into 2027 and possibly beyond. 1 Console prices have climbed through repeated increases, and Microsoft hasn’t reported a Series X|S unit figure in years. 2

The used-console push is where this lands for buyers. Xbox has emailed some owners who haven’t powered on their consoles in a long while, urging them to trade in at retailers like Best Buy. 1 Microsoft doesn’t profit on a used sale, but a console in an active player’s hands can drive later purchases on the platform. Kotaku points to Grand Theft Auto 6 as one example. 1

Timing matters. Microsoft’s own outlook says hardware revenue should decline again year over year in the holiday quarter, even with GTA 6 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 in play. 2 GTA 6 is console-only at launch, so a rush on hardware is the expected scenario for both Microsoft and Sony. 2

Looking ahead, Project Helix devices are reportedly due around holiday 2028. One report, unconfirmed by Microsoft, pegged the next-gen console at $1,200 to $1,800 if Microsoft doesn’t subsidize it the way it has past launches. That is a rumor, not a price. 1

What it costs you: if you want a Series X|S, check stock now, because new-box prices have already gone up more than once. If you own one and it’s gathering dust, a trade-in is the route Microsoft is actively encouraging. 12

Our read: Xbox wants the story to be about scarcity, while the numbers show a business shipping fewer boxes at higher prices. Both can be partly true, since the RAM squeeze is real. Watch the holiday quarter. If GTA 6 can’t lift hardware sales, supply won’t be the only explanation left standing. Standings check: Xbox slips on price and availability this week, with the refurbished and trade-in route the one new option for players.
