Roblox daily users fall 9 percent, and the company's answer is AI

Roblox reported 138 million daily active users, below the 145 million estimate, and said generative AI tools will help make up the shortfall.

Roblox reported 138 million daily active users for the quarter, down 9 percent from a year earlier and below the 145 million estimate. 1

Hours engaged came in at 34 billion. That beat estimates, but it is still a 15 percent decline from the previous year. 1 The company attributed the drop to the prior year having been a period of strong growth. 1

The quarter was not without hits. Games such as You Can Steal an Egg drew attention on the platform. 1 The user count fell anyway.

The plan

Roblox says it will offset the weaker demand by investing heavily in generative AI game creation. 1 The company states that more than 80 percent of the platform’s top 100 games from the past quarter were made with AI tools. 1

Founder and CEO David Baszucki told investors that AI is “fundamentally reshaping the gaming industry.” 1 He described it as a step-function change in how quickly content can be created. 1

The training question

The AI push arrives alongside a training-data problem. Earlier this week, Roblox confirmed to Game Developer that an AI agent had scraped 145.5 GB of 3D assets, including adult content, from Open3DLab. 1 A Roblox spokesperson called it a mistake and said the content would not be used for AI training going forward. 1

The numbers on the table: users down 9 percent, hours down 15 percent, and more than 80 percent of top games built with AI tools. The company’s position is that the third number will fix the first two.

Our read: Faster content creation is a supply-side answer to what looks like a demand-side shortfall. More games can be made quickly, but the quarter’s figures measure whether people show up to play them. The next report will show whether daily users and hours engaged move in the same direction as the content pipeline. Until then, the forecast is unchanged: AI is the plan, and the user count is the test.
