id Software and MachineGames deepen ties after Xbox layoffs

Two Bethesda and Xbox studios say they are working more closely than ever, with Wolfenstein 3 the obvious rumored payoff.

What changed: id Software, the Doom studio, says it is now working more closely with MachineGames, the team behind the recent Wolfenstein games and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, in the wake of the Xbox “reset” layoffs.1

Studio co-director Marty Stratton laid it out at a press event for the Doom: The Dark Ages - Revelations DLC. He said about half of id’s staff left as part of the cuts, but that the studio was deliberately kept viable across game development and technology.1 On MachineGames, he said the two teams are “working more closely with MachineGames than ever,” with a joint push on technology development that began earlier this year, before the layoffs.1

MachineGames has used id’s idTech engine for every one of its games, and the studio is heavily rumored to be working on Wolfenstein 3, with studio head Jerk Gustafsson saying the team is not done with Wolfenstein yet.1 Nobody has confirmed that a shared project exists. That is speculation from IGN’s reporter, and it is the only source for this story.1

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has said she wants development teams to double down on their biggest franchises, a view Bethesda boss Jill Braff echoes, and getting games out more quickly is one of Sharma’s goals.1 With id seemingly finished with The Dark Ages after Revelations, pairing it with MachineGames could help a third Wolfenstein arrive sooner.1 Amazon also has a Wolfenstein TV series in development.1

What it costs you: nothing right now, and no date or announcement to circle. If you own an Xbox or PC and love either shooter, the takeaway is that both franchises sit in the group of priorities, and the two teams are sharing engine know-how.

Our read: Layoffs usually mean fewer swings at the plate. The two proven shooter studios are working more closely on technology. Until a platform holder puts a name and a date on a joint game, any shared-project claim stays unconfirmed. Standings check: no gain or loss for players this week, just a promising lineup card. Under review.
