EA closes BioWare, cancels next Mass Effect in 400-job cut
Electronic Arts is shutting BioWare after more than 30 years and ending Mass Effect development as part of roughly 400 layoffs, about 3% of staff.

Electronic Arts is closing BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and ending early development on the next Mass Effect game. The decision came on Wednesday, October 21, as part of a layoff of about 400 people, roughly 3% of EA’s workforce. About 50 of those jobs were at BioWare.12
The timing follows the $55 billion buyout of EA by a group led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, which closed in August.23 The deal is described as the largest leveraged buyout in history. PIF put in $36 billion and borrowed $20 billion from JPMorgan, and the debt sits on EA’s books.3 One figure in circulation puts that debt load at $18 billion.4 Either way, the company now has interest to pay.
The reported reasoning is a budget one. EA decided it could afford to back only one expensive sci-fi action game, and Star Wars: Battlefront 3 was judged the smaller risk next to Mass Effect 5. Both were expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Battlefront 3, to be built by Respawn and DICE, had not started development when the call was made.42 EA’s own announcement calls it only “a future project.”2
BioWare’s recent record did not help the case. Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017 was widely seen as a misstep. Anthem in 2019 was a live-service bet that did not pan out. Dragon Age: The Veilguard missed sales targets, and EA laid off some BioWare staff in 2025 as a result.2 About 50 people were working on Mass Effect 5 at the end.4
The rest of the roadmap was reshuffled in the same memo. Marvel’s Iron Man and a new Star Wars Jedi title continue. A football game code-named Project Gridiron is in the works, and a new Fight Night boxing title is in pre-production. The Sims is pausing “Project Lotus” to focus on “Project Evergreen,” and the skateboarding game Skate is getting studio changes.2 Reportedly, BioWare’s Austin studio remains open to support other EA games.4
The Mass Effect TV series at Amazon is still in development, per IGN.24 A fan petition to save the franchise is near 300,000 signatures. There is no sign EA intends to sell the property.4
BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk called the buyout “the final nail in the coffin.”4 The studio’s farewell message listed Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem as its legacy.2 The sector is shrinking elsewhere too: Xbox is cutting 3,200 jobs, and Epic Games has laid off over 1,000.2
Outlook: the next EA earnings report will be the first look at how a leveraged balance sheet and a leaner slate show up in the numbers.
Our read: The closure is a capital-allocation decision more than a creative one. With debt to service, EA picked the franchise with the safer pitch and dropped the studio with the weaker recent sales. Headcount is the smaller story. What matters is that a company with $7.5 billion in annual revenue now funds fewer, larger bets, and a 30-year-old studio did not make the cut.3
