Spike Chunsoft has announced that the Danganronpa series has passed 10 million in sales, a milestone for a visual novel franchise that began on PlayStation Portable in 2010.1

The run so far: three mainline entries and two spin-offs, spread across handhelds, consoles and PC.1 The games put you in the shoes of high school students forced to kill one another by a bear plushie that loves a monologue, with gameplay that mixes debating and sharpshooting.1 Strange? Absolutely. Eurogamer’s own writers have called out the series for its surprisingly good writing, and a 2023 Pride Week piece summed it up as a Battle-Royale-meets-Ace-Attorney visual novel series that is, quite frankly, insane.1

What comes next is Danganronpa 2x2, planned for next year. It will feature a new scenario alongside a revamped one from Danganronpa 2.1

What it means if you already own the games: the back catalog is the story here. The earlier entries are available across a spread of platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4 and PlayStation Vita, so a sales milestone like this is a decent moment to catch up before the new release arrives.1 If you have only played the first game, the revamped Danganronpa 2 content in 2x2 is a hint of where the series is heading.1

The milestone also lands at a tidy time. A series that started as a PSP curiosity now has ten million copies out in the world and a fresh game on the calendar.1

Our read: Ten million is a big number for a series this weird, and it tells you the audience for twisted murder-mystery visual novels is far larger than the genre’s reputation suggests. Spike Chunsoft is pairing the milestone with new and revamped content in Danganronpa 2x2, which is a sensible way to welcome newcomers while rewarding longtime fans. Standings check: Spike Chunsoft takes the week, with a franchise milestone and a new game on the schedule, and no one on the roster getting benched.1
