Hot off the wire: Pearl Abyss has put a five-hour trial of Crimson Desert Enhanced on PlayStation and Xbox, and your progress follows you if you buy the full game. 12

The trial arrived alongside the launch of the Charting the Unknown DLC, which went live on October 29. 12 Timing like that is no accident, pal.

Here is who gets in. On PlayStation 5, the trial is open to PlayStation Plus Premium and Deluxe subscribers. 2 On Xbox, it is open to all players, paid subscription or not. 12 So “free” comes with fine print on Sony’s side of the street.

The rules are tight. The trial covers only the base game, not the new DLC. 2 It is limited to one use per account. 2 Once five hours are burned, it ends and cannot be restarted. 2 Eurogamer put it bluntly: the timer is final. 1 No second save, no loophole. If you buy, the trial progress carries over to the full game. 2

One thing doesn’t line up. The sources disagree on how long the trial runs. Eurogamer says it runs from October 29 to January 6. 1 Pearl Abyss lists January 7, 2027 for Xbox, and October 29, 2027 for PlayStation Plus subscribers. 2 That PlayStation date looks like a typo to me, since a one-year window would be an odd fit next to Xbox’s two months. That is my inference, not a confirmed fact. Check your platform’s store page before you plan around the deadline.

Why hand out free time now? Because the game has already done its heavy lifting. Crimson Desert, which launched March 19, passed six million copies sold in just 83 days. 3 It sold two million on launch day and cleared five million within its first month. 3 A trial this late is a play for the people who sat on the fence, not a rescue job.

The Enhanced version itself came as a free update, version 2.00.00. It added new cutscenes and story moments to the main questline, plus voiceover in German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese. 4 Pearl Abyss has also said a Nintendo Switch 2 version is in the works. 1

The trial is live on both consoles now. Details sit on Pearl Abyss’s notice page for anyone who wants the full rules in writing. 2

Our read: A trial on top of a game that has already cleared six million is a mop-up operation for holdouts, and the DLC launch gives it a convenient spotlight. The PlayStation Plus gate takes some shine off the word “free,” and the mismatched end dates are the kind of loose thread I’d want tied off in writing. Until Pearl Abyss clarifies, trust the store page over the press copy. I’ll keep the lamp on.
