Bungie maps Destiny 2's long road back: don't expect it whole before 2028

Bungie says Destiny 2's old campaigns won't be fully back until 2028, and is teasing a 'new, forever Destiny' and a 'Legacy' project.

Hot off the wire from Bungie’s blog: the road back for Destiny 2 is real, and it is long. The studio’s head of product, Josh Deane, called this a “true reset moment” for Bungie, Marathon and Destiny, and admitted “time isn’t our friend.” 1

The hard facts first. Bungie is in pre-production on unvaulting the Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind campaigns, plus the strikes, raids and raid lairs from those releases, and Menagerie with reprised rewards. 12 Full production is targeted for February 2027, and Deane says the porting work will take about 12 months from there. 13 Do the math, pal: that puts the finish line in 2028.

Why so slow? Bungie says it isn’t a matter of restoring old files. Changes made since Beyond Light mean lighting, encounters, combatants and other systems have to be updated so returning content meets the stability and gameplay standards of today’s game. 4

A second phase would restore more of the connective tissue: free roam destinations, seasonal activities, raid weapon updates and PvP maps. 1 The sources disagree on where the seasonal run ends, with one citing The Coil as Season 23 and another as Season 32. 13 A third tier, including the New Light experience, seasonal story missions and the missing Gambit map Kell’s Grave, is not on the roadmap yet. 1

There is more cooking. Bungie teased a celebration in Destiny 2 beyond Monument of Triumph, something called “Destiny ‘Legacy,’” and a third item labeled “Redacted.” 13 Deane also set expectations low for the near term: no Destiny announcement at The Game Awards this year, and no sudden logo drop to set the world on fire. 1 The studio promises updated timelines around February 2027. 1

The larger pitch is what Bungie calls a “new, forever Destiny,” built while rebuilding a relationship with the community. 1 The studio’s September letter put it in plain terms: restoring vaulted content is the first step, and trust has to be earned through the games and the decisions behind them. 45

Bungie also launched a regular Community Update blog, which it says won’t be a weekly series. It will cover Destiny, Marathon and general studio news. 2

Our read: Bungie is trading flash for a schedule, and that is the right trade after the end-of-service announcement. But the plan is vague where it counts. Is “Legacy” the original Destiny, a separate game, or part of the “forever” project? The sources never say, and Bungie hasn’t either. A campaign return in 2028 is a long wait for fans who were told the lights were going out. Watch February 2027; that’s when promises either get dates or get quiet.

Until then, the presses sit idle and the coffee goes cold.
