AO3 offline for up to four weeks after security incident
Archive of Our Own is down for two to four weeks while its volunteer team investigates a security incident; the OTW says no works were deleted.

Stop the presses, pal. Archive of Our Own, the fanfic library millions lean on, is dark, and it may stay that way for a month.
The Organization for Transformative Works, the nonprofit that runs AO3, posted an update Thursday saying it expects restoration to take about two weeks, with a ceiling of four. 12 The site went down early Thursday, just after 3 AM ET, on what was first billed as a 12-hour maintenance job. 23 That estimate lasted about as long as a cheap cigar.
The cause is no longer a mystery. A later OTW notice says the team detected evidence of a security incident on AO3 and is still in the early stages of working out its scope. 4 The OTW told CNET the incident is not tied to the PHP security flaw going around, because the Archive runs on Ruby on Rails. 3
Here is what the OTW says is safe. No AO3 data has been deleted, so works, bookmarks and kudos are intact. 4 The OTW does not believe the user database was stolen but cannot rule it out. That database holds usernames, email addresses, IP addresses and hashed passwords. 4 AO3 collects no real names, and donor information sits in a separate system that was not exposed. 4 The advice: change your password anywhere else you reuse your AO3 one. 4
There is a sliver of hope. The OTW says it may bring the site back in a degraded state sooner, possibly read-only, but warns it could have to pull it down again without notice. 41
The reaction was what you’d expect when a library of this size locks its doors. Readers flooded Bluesky and X with despair, one user begging to be institutionalized and another joking that this is “no nut November.” 1 Others pitched in with practical help. Communities like the r/DeletedFanfiction subreddit and Bluesky members are sharing copies of works they had already downloaded and crowdsourcing alternatives. 3 Wattpad and FanFiction are the stopgaps on offer. 3
What is still unclear is plenty. The OTW has not said how the incident started or how far it reached. It has not said whether any of the October 23 and 24 problems with email notifications, search, history and listings are connected. 2 Its engineers are volunteers, not paid staff, which may slow the repair. 2 The OTW says it may not answer individual user questions and will post updates on its official channels. 4
Our read: Two to four weeks is a wide window, and the OTW’s own words, “early stages,” say they are still sizing up the damage. Treat any date as a guess until the site is actually back. Meanwhile, change that password and keep your downloads backed up. I’ll be here when the lights come on.
